Reflecting on the Banned Bookathon

Updated: Mar 14, 2020

Hello Everyone!

A little while ago, Catriona from the Booktube channel LittleBookOwl made a video announcing the Banned Bookathon. The Banned Bookathon is a week long readathon that coincides with the ALA’s Banned Books Week. Both raise awareness about banning books and celebrate banned books, usually with a specific theme each year. This years theme was Diversity. Anywho, Catriona made an announcement video and asked if there was anyone that wanted to host, as she needed some help. I am personally very passionate about Banned Books, having spent four months studying the phenomenon of banning books and what to do about banning books. It was a very enlightening experience and I ended up writing a research paper on it and working with the ALA. So, of course, you can imagine that when I heard Catriona’s announcement I was like, “count me in!” Then I actually got to be a part of the Banned Bookathon!

I got to host Twitter sprints with the other Banned Bookathon hosts Kassie, Catriona, Molly and Anaïs for the week and it was an absolute blast. I will admit that I was very nervous. Kassie and Catriona are people that I have watched do their thing on Booktube for years and I didn’t feel like I could live up to hosting with them. I also hadn’t ever hosted anything before and am a pretty small name in the Bookish community, so I had convinced myself that no one was going to participate when I was running sprints because no one knew who I was. Man was I wrong!

This experience was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Everyone was so inviting and supportive and chill. It was awesome to interact with people in different time zones all at the same time over Twitter. Having people respond to questions that I asked or tell me how well their reading was going was such a gratifying experience. We were all reading and all fighting for a common good and raising awareness! It made me feel so inspired and loved and I even hosted sprints for days and times that I wasn’t assigned because it wasn’t stressful. It was just fun. I couldn’t have asked for better people to host with or a better hosting experience and I am so glad that Catriona allowed me to be a part of this awesome week. I encourage everyone to go check all of these girls out on their links below and show them support. They are truly wonderful people and I can’t wait for next year!

2016-A Year in Review

Hello Everyone! Ok. 2016 was not my best reading year. Compared to the 61 books that I read last year, the 35 books that I read this year are nothing. I didn’t even reach my Goodreads goal. Even thoug
